The Secret Place

There hides a secret place and there a person finds a stairway leading up. In that secret place of Song of Solomon 2:14 the safe zone promotes our elevation, our lift, our rising above. There He encourages our voice, our countenance. There hides another place, a strong tower, where we  also ascend to the highest overlook possible. Here, in His nature, we are above our enemies. A third hiding place preserves from trouble; songs of deliverance flow around.  Another places us under His wing’s shadow. Psalm 32:7, Proverbs 18:10. Psalm 91:1

Corrie and Betsie ten Boom were middle-aged sisters working in their father’s watchmaker shop in pre-WWII Holland. Their uneventful lives are disrupted with the coming of the Nazis. Suspected of hiding Jews & caught breaking rationing rules, they are sent to a concentration camp, where their Christian faith keeps them from despair and bitterness. Betsie eventually dies, but Corrie survives, and after the war, must learn to love and forgive her former captors.Mark Hettler   imdb.com  These ones hid their Jewish friends but then were made to find hiding in Spiritual ways and gained a ministry in hiding. Their story is “The Hiding Place.”

Friends, a believer in Christ has a life hid with Christ in God; they have gone through death, but amazingly still live on, yet their lives are hidden. Paul asks these believers in Romans 6, “Do you not know that we were buried with Him through baptism into His death?” O mystery of the cross! Burial generally means that we are out of sight. Indeed we are hidden.

“So, David hid himself in the field.”

Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest: and Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said unto him,

“Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?”

David ran for fear of his life from Saul the king, hiding himself in the tall grass surrounding the city. It was Saul’s agitated demeanor and spear-throwing itch which made David nervous. David then had a fugitive-journey and finds the priest, Ahimelech.

Three things we cannot overlook in the fleeing:

  1. Ahimelech shows fear because David comes unaccompanied.
  2. Yes, David, alone, must cover his fugitive status with excuses and lies.
  3. David, famished and hungered, requests bread and receives the holy bread at the priest’s hand.

Beloved, our hidden life may cause some to squirm as the resurrected Christ brought fear and doubt to his disciples, hiding after the crucifixion. We may have to explain ourselves to doubters as Jesus did with Thomas in the upper room after the crucifixion. Howbeit, as David ate holy bread, so we commune with the Holy One when hiding in death, burial, and resurrection. 1 Samuel 20:24 -1 Samuel 21.

Not done hiding, David goes to Gath; “David changed his behavior before Achish the king of Gath, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard.

Have you ever felt like doing this? I have.

There’s more: “David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them.” Done with “official” people, David found a more remote hiding. The cave of Adullam was where only a few could find him. There he found his ministry with the distressed.

In closing,  Hebrews 13:12-13 teaches, “Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach.” God takes us into hiding where we bear His reproach.

“And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.” Isaiah 32:2   When we find a holy fellowship, others find that hiding place. We happily share it with them! love ya
