But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding. Job 32:8
Job 32:9 Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment.
Wisdom is the principal thing, therefore get wisdom, and with all thy getting, get understanding. Why do we need wisdom?
We need wisdom for courage to face the challenges that come our way. Wisdom is too high for foolish people.
There is a wisdom that is from below spoken Of in James chapter 3. That wisdom is earthy, sensual, demonic. This kind of wisdom is all too prevalent in our country today. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, peaceable, gentle, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, without hypocrisy. It’s easy to be entreated. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace unto them who make peace.
Wisdom indeed is a person, it is the person of Jesus Christ. And this Christ is in us, the hope of glory. Colossians 1: 27. ” …the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: ” “Wisdom rejoices in the habitable part of the earth, and delights itself with the children of men.” See proverbs chapter 8 versus 30 through 35.

Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.
Wisdom is the ability to use knowledge right in the nick of time. This is a definition given by doctor Carl H Stevens in his book, “Divine ethics promoting moral ethics.” again we see the timeliness of the use of wisdom. Proverbs 19 in verse 20 says that we should “hear council and receive instruction that we may be wise in the latter end.” instruction is spiritual correction and moral correction through discipline. It is obvious that a study of the word of God is a preliminary for wisdom.
Proverbs 1:2 “To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; “
The Hebrew word for instruction, “intelligence,” means understanding with discernment, discernment with sharp perception. Understanding is learning through the unhappy experiences of others and yourself.
Beloved we must invest time to gain knowledge through instruction. As we are gaining knowledge we are learning to apply that knowledge in the details of life. eg.
Wisdom is simply knowledge ‘right now’ for my circumstance. Understanding tells us that sometimes those circumstances are unhappy experiences. And thankfully there is wisdom for these times too.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven

Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man’s heart discerneth both time and judgment. Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him. Ecclesiastes 8:6
Wisdom is the principal thing. Proverbs chapter 4 verse 7 .
So in layman’s terms , all of our learning is taking us somewhere , it’s taking us into the course of life , designed explicitly by God for our sanctification.(separation unto Himself for His purpose). In other words, God is conforming us to the image of Christ , Romans 8:29; having begun the good work he continues until the day of Christ. Philippians 1:6
Some verse on safety.
- Psalm_4:8 I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.
- Proverbs 11:14 Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
- Proverbs 24:6 For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.
Not in the council of many advisors, but in the council of many scriptures, many promises, many verses tucked away for the Holy spirit’s recall. As spoken in John chapter 14 verse 26. Not a variety of options because we are not trying to find a solution in our situation but we are learning to find God’s safety and help in our time of trouble. Big difference: listen to these verses:
- Isaiah 30:20 And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers:
- Isaiah 30:21 And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.
We have a throne of grace to help in time of need. We are told to come boldly to that throne. Hebrews 4:16. Seems that God is an ever present help in time of trouble. Mercy means that God takes away the effects of my sin , he does not deal with me after my sin. Mercy rejoices against judgment. And in that state which God created for me, I can come to him in prayer and ask from my desire. In this place there is mutual respect. Mine is totally unworthy respect, God’s is totally worthy. There is blood on that mercy seat, the very blood of God. Acts 20:28
Beloved, “And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.’ Psalm 50:15
