A football player rode the bench.
He never played, never planned to play, he was third string. In this game the first stringer went down, broken leg. Bad for the team but no worries for our guy, second string went in. Before long this halfback twisted something. Oh no, the bench rider was up.
“George, put on a helmet,” the coach shouted.
“But coach, I can’t do it, I have never played.”
“Just get in there, you’ll be fine.”
“Can’t, sorry coach, I’m afraid.”
Coach had to call for a time out, and then he spoke these words:
“George, relax, you’re gonna be my secret weapon.”
“Whatta ya mean coach?”
“I’m gonna put the spirit of a great running back in you.”
“How?”
“Trust me.”
“Who?”
“Franco Harris” “Now get in the game.”
The story makes us laugh. It’s a fairy story to a lot of us. Some vital points to this allegory are these:
- George was a broken man; he had no pride of determined ego to drive him.
- Every reception of God’s Spirit implies a discarding of the self-life. Many cannot abandon the holds.
- Franco Harris ain’t no run-of-the-mill player and God didn’t put some phantom in us, we got Jesus!
Friends, life needs spontaneity. Life quite frankly needs life. Life needs folks with Jesus moving in em.
Have we merely turned over a new leaf? Have we gotten converted? Have we got religion?
Look at a plethora of life’s observations by plain folks.
~ An optimist is a guy that has never had much experience. ~ Don Marquis
~ It takes half your life before you discover life is a do-it-yourself project. ~ Napoleon Hill
~ A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way. ~Mark Twain
~ Experience is a comb which nature gives to men when they are bald. ~ Chinese Proverb
~ No physician is really good before he has killed one or two patients. ~ Hindu Proverb
Some observations:
- Optimism comes when limits of experience go?
- Life is “do it yourself?”
- Don’t grab a cat by the tail, but if you do, you have a story to tell.
- Experience lags behind spontaneous?
- We cannot be afraid to try something new.
Those are some guidelines, we still do the life.
Folks, God has loved us perfectly, placing His Son in each believer — It’s because, without Him we can do nothing, but with Him all things are possible.
Let your religion be less of a theory and more of a love affair.G.K.Chesterton
“Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.”
“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.”
“We love him, because he first loved us.” 1John 4:17-19
God’s answer for inhibiting fear is love made perfect. Perfect love and “as He is, so are ye,” go together.
Lastly, He will perform the thing concerning you, Job 23:14 — Faithful is He, who also will do it.” 1 Thessalonians 5:24
“When the servant of the man of God got up early the next morning and went outside, there were troops, horses, and chariots everywhere. “Oh, sir, what will we do now?” the young man cried to Elisha.”
“Don’t be afraid!” Elisha told him. “For there are more on our side than on theirs!”
“Then Elisha prayed, “O LORD, open his eyes and let him see!” The LORD opened the young man’s eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire.” 2Kings 6:15-17
Beloved, go in faith, God will be with you and He will do the concerned thing. He will open things up as you go. This is perfect love.
love ya,
