Spikenard, Myrrh, and Camphire

Song of Solomon 1:12  While the king sitteth at his table, my spikenard sendeth forth the smell thereof.
Song of Solomon 1:13  A bundle of myrrh is my well-beloved unto me; he shall lie all night betwixt my breasts.
Song of Solomon 1:14  My beloved is unto me as a cluster of camphire in the vineyards of Engedi.

“The spikenard is a lowly herb, the emblem of humility.”

“…as Mary did when she anointed Jesus’ feet with the ointment of spikenard that was very costly, one pound of it worth three hundred pence, and so fragrant that the house was filled with the pleasing odor of it. (John_12:3) ‘Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.”

Very precious and fragrant, an herb grown in India, Spikenard conveys the exceeding grateful love of  one so undeserving; a lowly response, a humble thankfulness, a joyful acceptance, .

A bundle of myrrh is my well-beloved unto me.

“… denotes the abundance of the odors of divine grace in Christ, who is full of it, which he communicates in great plenty: and now Christ is all this, not to any and everyone; but to his church and people, to whom alone he is precious,” JFB

The major ingredient in the anointing oil of Exodus 30, myrrh made something common into something precious. The country girl of Song of Solomon 1 carries the extreme value of Christ’ suffering — the pouring forth of grace, between her breasts, right next to her heart. It represented to her value, significance; in fact the highest value given to any human being. This, we the Church so do also — yes very close — in fact, the closest to our heart is grace and truth — Christ alone.

My beloved is unto me as a cluster of camphire in the vineyards of Engedi.

“The word translated camphire is copher, the same word that signifies atonement or propitiation.” Matthew Henry. Christ is our mercy seat, yes my mercy seat, by which I enter the presence of God unscathed. My sick head, faint heart, wounds, bruises, purifying sores — my failure, ineptitude, stupidity, fearfulness, and rebellion are removed from sight, counted insignificant, treated as if they never were, and blown from practical, virtual, inward or outward existence because of the precious blood of atonement which makes me one with Christ. Hallelujah !

Song of Solomon 1:15 “Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves’ eyes. ”
Song of Solomon 1:16  “Behold, thou art fair, my beloved, yea, pleasant: also our bed is green. ”
Song of Solomon 1:17  “The beams of our house are cedar, and our rafters of fir. “

He calls her “beautiful.” Twice. Yes, “black but comely” has become “beautiful” in His eyes. Dove’s eyes? Single eyed, undividedly attentive on Him, she sees nothing else but Him.

A third time, “thou art BEAUTIFUL

DELIGHTFUL! The praise is reciprocal.

Our marital union and rest flourishes green. Our relaxed mind eventuates a far reaching effect on others. The beauty of holiness draws a crowd. The Christ, lifted up, draws all men to Himself.

Lastly, our canopy is of cedar, our rafters of fir. A beautiful home in the country, away from the hustle and bustle, joining the refreshing country-side with streams and meadows, wildlife and birds, our soul takes its rest in such a place.

Is it a dream? No, it is a dream come true for all believers.

Folks,  you are your Beloved’s and He is yours. Delight, enjoy, rest, thrill, and be overwhelmed in Him. You are the object of His love.  Love ya
