Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. John 17:17
For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations. Psalm 100:5
For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth. 2Corinthians 13:8
“To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. John 18:37b
Ephesians 4:15 teaches, ” …speaking the truth in love, we grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.”
Truth is the ultimate weapon of the believer. It ever endures, cannot be negated through opposition. In truth we are sanctified, speaking it we grow. As we live in truth, we hear the voice of truth. The Spirit of truth guides us into all truth. (John 16:13). We gird our loins with it (Ephesians 6), for Christ Himself bears witness to the truth, indeed He is the truth. John 14:6
John teaches that with that truth came grace. Mercy also had met with truth, and righteousness and peace have kissed each other in Psalm 85. God’s truth has set the record straight about all of life, and all things that pertain to life and godliness have been given to us. (2 Peter 1:3), In truth , we have received exceeding great and precious promises, that by these we might be partakers of the divine nature.
We have escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. Yes this lust stands in opposition to the truth of God. Indeed, they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. Galatians 5:24 This is an aorist tense, meaning it was done at a point in time. The aorist is a picture tense.
J.F.B. explains, “They nailed it (flesh, affections, lusts), to the cross once for all when they became Christ’s, on believing and being baptized. They keep it now in a state of crucifixion (Rom_6:6): so that the Spirit can produce in them, comparatively uninterrupted by it, “the fruit of the Spirit” (Gal_5:22). “Man, by faith, is dead to the former standing point of a sinful life, and rises to a new life (Gal_5:25) of communion with Christ (Col_3:3). The act by which they have crucified the flesh with its lust, is already accomplished ideally in principle. But the practice, or outward conformation of the life, must harmonize with the tendency given to the inward life” (Gal_5:25) [Neander]. We are to be executioners, dealing cruelly with the body of sin,
Romans 6 explains it this way:
- We must know: –that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death. Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death. That our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. That Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
- We believe — Rom 6:8 — if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him.”
- We reckon — …also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
- We Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
- We neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
Lastly , sin shall not have dominion over us, for we are not under the law, but under grace. The strength of sin is in the law. Indeed the motions of sin are by the law. The law was given that every mouth will be shut. That sin might become exceeding sinful. That people might know sin. The law schoolmastered believers to faith, and does not now pertain to a righteous man. Galatians 3
Friends, yield not to sin unto death, but unto the obedience of Christ, whose obedience purchased our salvation through a bloody cross.
Bring every thought captive to this truth. It endures forever.
