The Straight Path

“Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.  Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.” Proverbs 4:25-27

  • The (above) admonition thus refers not to the careful consideration which measures the way leading to the goal which one wishes to reach, but to the preparation of the way by the removal of that which prevents unhindered progress and makes the way insecure.
  • …first to level, and then to make straight with the level.
  • We must remove all that can become a moral hindrance or a dangerous obstacle, in our life-course, in order that we may make right steps with our feet,
  • He must … give a direction to his way; a right way, which keeps in and facilitates the keeping in the straight direction.
  • See to it that all the ways which thou goest lead straight to the end. K and D commentary

A life of integrity requires attention to heart, speech, eyes, and conduct. J,F and B

Lets condense the thought:

  • Remove physical hazards and hindrances.
  • Level the playing field.
  • Remove moral hindrances.
  • Walk the line straightest to the end.
  • Consider what we cherish, say, look at, or do — they could be hindrances.

Luke teaches us, For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,  Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. Luke 14:28-30

So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsakes not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:33

“Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consults whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desires conditions of peace. ” Luke 14:31-32

J.F. and B comments “in the warfare you will each have to wage as my disciples, despise not your enemy’s strength, for the odds are all against you.”

We repeat the thought, “So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsakes not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.” Luke 14:33

With the Lord, our shepherd; “We shall not want.  He makes us to lie down in green pastures: he leads us beside the still waters.   He restores our soul: he leads us in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
